Conscious Business UK is a member-owned and member-organised community of practice exploring different ways to do business.
We’re all types of people. But we’re generally critical of how business and management currently operate. So while we also acknowledge the very many positive changes that are underway, we are interested in helping bring about a world where business and management, and the economic system, work better – for a wider set of stakeholders.
There are, of course, many different alternatives to consider. But they all seem to have in common a belief that the purpose of business is not simply to make money. And that other objectives are equally valid.
We also believe that increasing our ‘consciousness’ helps. For some that means increasing awareness – of ourselves, of other people, and of what is happening in the world around us. For others it means ‘conscience’ and taking a more ethical position, and focussing more on sustainability.
The first small group exploring Conscious Business formed in early 2012. Since then more than 500 people have joined in – either through attending events, or by participating in online groups.
We’ve had many interesting and practical discussions since then, and the enquiry continues to evolve – for some into practical things people can do, and for others into new areas of research and development. This can be understood as participatory action research.
